Starlight Mints – Change Remains

by Marielle Evangelista (Psychology), published June 29th 2010

Change Remains, the fourth album from Oklahoma natives Starlight Mints is the album I’ve been searching for but never quite found. It is everything music should be. The genre listed on their myspace, ‘€˜indie pop’ doesn’t even begin to cover the magic of their sound. If I had to give them a label, it would be more along the lines of ‘€˜electropsychadelicbubblegumspasticrock’.

With sprinkles. Yes, they are that good. With each album, Starlight Mints seems to get better and better, and the newest one is no exception. Their first two albums, The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of and Built on Squares, were quirky and fun, but they didn’t experiment much with different styles until their third, Drownatown. With Change remains, they expanded their sound even further.
Change Remains takes the listener on a musical rollercoaster; transitioning smoothly from 70s disco-beats to sounds reminiscent of The Beatles cerca Sergeant Pepper, with some sprinkling of 80s pop and soft 90s indie rock in-between. But what’s great about Change Remains is that despite the clear influences, Starlight Mints manage to put together an album that still seems fresh and all their own. Each song is already great by itself, but put together they form an awesome and original album that anyone who loves weird, catchy music should check out. Who knew such wonderful things could come out of Oklahoma?
