Ke$ha – Animal
by Anishka George (Music Industry), published June 30th 2010
Alright, I know what you’re thinking: here comes another blonde, no talent, one hit wonder, party animal pop star. And, although that is probably true, you should still listen to this album. Ke$ha’s debut album is, in short, FUN, so long as you don’t take any of it too seriously. Animal doesn’t exactly fit into a particular mold: it’s far too risqué for your typically teeny boppers and much too unintelligent for the experimental and electronic fans. What makes it work, however, is the fact that Ke$ha doesn’t take it too seriously herself. Lyrically, it is all very simple and unintelligent, but the music is very catchy. In fact, every track on this album can be danced to. ‘Party at a Rich Dude’s House’ is about crashing a rich kid’s party and throwing up in their closet (supposedly Paris Hilton’s house). More themes of partying and hooking up apathetically recur often throughout the album, like in tracks ‘Hungover’ and ‘Boots and Boys.’
To put it simply, this album is light, fun, and upbeat. It can definitely be enjoyed, so long as you overlook the fact that everything is ‘slightly’ auto-tuned and there is not a single track without synthesized drums in the background and that she co-wrote the entire album with her mother. Clearly Ke$ha has had great success with this album, as it has reached the top of the charts. If you can’t get enough of her first single “Tik Tok,” (or you just get it out of your head whether you want to or not…), I would recommend downloading tracks “Backstaber,” “Take It Off,” and “Blah, Blah, Blah” featuring 3OH!3. These songs are all equally upbeat, infectious, and guaranteed to be in your head all day. All in all, Ke$ha’s glitter trash image should be embraced and we should all just enjoy Animal as a guilty pleasure pop album.
