Eagles of Death Metal – Heart On
by Kyle Risley (Business), published August 13th 2010
Under the mindset of ‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,’ Eagles of Death Metal have continued penning songs that are sure to become the town’s Saturday night soundtrack. The result is Heart On, an album that proves Eagles of Death Metal never forgot that when it comes to sex, drugs, and rock & roll – the first two would really suck without the third.
Heart On kicks off with handclaps and roaring guitars on ‘Anything ‘Cept The Truth,’ a high energy cut that showcases Eagles of Death Metal’s intoxicating mixture of heavy desert rock, whiskey soaked blues and punchy garage rock with a feel good attitude. Vocalist and guitarist Jesse Hughes sings over the tight, swaggering blues riffs in a smooth, crooning voice that amplifies the sexiness of the record. ‘I’m Your Torpedo’ wraps up the record with grooving, ass-shaking riffs, a catchy melody, and plenty of sexual innuendo; succinctly summarizing the major themes of the record. The subject matter rarely gets too serious, only occasionally straying into the realm of introspection on tracks like ‘Now I’m A Fool’ and ‘How Can A Man With So Many Friends Feel So All Alone,’ but make no mistake – this is drinking music of a high order and the band doesn’t take the responsibility lightly.
Reminding everyone that rock & roll is supposed to be fun, Eagles of Death Metal are a big middle finger to all the bands that think their shit don’t stink or are more concerned with SoundScan numbers than good music. In that respect, Heart On is a breath of fresh air, or more accurately, a breath of air laden with cheap beer and cigarettes.

About Eagles of Death Metal

Eagles of Death Metal are a rock band formed in Palm Desert, California in 1998. Despite the name, Eagles of Death Metal is not a death metal band. Hughes said that a friend was trying to introduce Josh Homme to the death metal genre. When he played the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was death metal, Homme called them "The Eagles of death metal". After hearing this phrase, he wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like.
