Preview: Volcano Choir @ Paradise Rock Club 9.11.13
Justin Vernon cast Bon Iver, his Grammy Award-winning and widely beloved main project, into an indefinite hiatus last September, but his musical output has done everything but slow down since then. He released a debut record with blues rock side project The Shouting Matches back in April, crooned over Kanye’s polarizing industrial menace on Yeezus this summer, and returns this month with a second album and tour from Volcano Choir.
Volcano Choir unites Vernon with current and former members of the post-rock group Collections of Colonies of Bees. The result is a textured sound that blends Vernon’s folksy roots with expansive, cinematic backdrops, playing his fragile falsetto vocals against gorgeous, sweeping instrumentals. Repave, the band’s September release, builds on the promise of 2009’s experimentally-minded Unmap and comes together as a more cohesive and impressive sophomore effort.
With the stellar new record also comes the band’s first proper North American tour, which makes a stop at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club this Wednesday. It comes highly recommended, and tickets are still available (for now).
