The Secret Generator Series: The Final Chapter
by Sammy Kaufman (Communications), published October 4th 2010
As I began my long walk to the secret location of Neon Indian’s show all I could focus on was how ridiculously cold it was, how I didn’t want to be walking, and besides a quick crash course on YouTube, I couldn’t honestly say I’ve ever even listened to Neon Indian. What a ball of sunshine I was.
The Urban Outfitters/Levi’s sponsored Secret Generator Series was a twenty-minute walk away from my apartment in a Power Station on 540 Harrison Avenue in the South End. Even before I reached Harrison I could hear the psychedelic, synthesized beats from two streets away. A numbered address was really just unnecessary as I walked towards the blaring music.
I made my way through the parking lot into the power station turned venue while wondering how many people honestly would have been able to find this place without Urban Outfitters blatantly posting the address on their blog. So much for that whole ‘secret’ thing. Either way, as I reached the front of the stage I was surrounded by a good hundred or so other concert-goers radiating pure excitement. People were jumping up and down, swaying back and forth, just genuinely having a good time and I soon shed my sourpuss attitude. It was almost too easy to be entertained as Alan Palomo warped samples while electric guitar and heavy drums echoed throughout the warehouse. I was expecting at any moment for a full dance party to break out. Neon Indian was able to do their recorded material justice while still providing their fans with a feeling of an actual performance.
It felt like it only just started when Neon Indian announced their encore and I ended up leaving with not only a free show under my belt but an entire new respect for chillwave, electronica, lo-fi, psychedelic and whatever other words that could be used to describe what is: Neon Indian
