21 Tales of Tastemakers
by Andrew Phan (Pharmacy), published November 21st 2010
In a day and age where terrestrial radio and print magazines are losing ground to the blogosphere in guiding the cultural compass of young listeners towards emerging artists, one Boston magazine has found its happy medium. In just 20 issues since it’s start as a pseudo-newsletter for the Northeastern University chapter of the Music & Entertainment Industry Students Association (MEISA), Tastemakers Magazine has expanded into a multimedia presence, reaching audiences through several social networking pages, a widely downloaded iTunes podcast, creative on-campus event and concert programming, and of course this genuinely hand-made website. Tastemakers has built a name not by finding a soapbox to judge and rank the endless supply of new music, but instead taking the passionate, ever-targeted 18-25 demographic and giving them their own platform to back the music that fuels their own inspiration. That personal touch has opened many doors and made lasting connections for this independent group of young entrepreneurs. This month, Tastemakers is sharing the stories that have led us to our 21st issue: the highs, the lows, the drama, the comedy.
