Mama Knows Best

by Emily Cassel (Journalism), published July 1st 2011

Last week, my mom and I bought our tickets to XPoNential Music Fest in Philly. Yeah, that’s right, when I’m back in Pennsylvania my mom and I are going to a music festival together. See, I’m one of those kids who’s lucky enough to have parents that share my indie-leaning tendencies, and I actually find that when I’m at home I go to shows with my family more often that I do with my friends. Maybe that’s super lame, but who am I to discriminate against someone with cutting-edge taste just because they have a few years on me? Phone calls with my mom often begin with her asking, ‘€œOh, have you heard of [insert trendy, obscure band name here]?’€ and me sheepishly replying, ‘€œNo… you’ll have to send me a link.’€

So although it isn’t Mother’s Day or anything, I’d like to present you all with a playlist of some of the greatest songs my Mama has ever introduced me to. Many of these artists have grown to become my all-time favorites, and I tend to think that my life would be a little emptier without them. (Oh, and before I lose all of my indie credibility, I’d like the record to show that I’ve introduced Mama Cassel to a lot of quality tunes over the years as well.)

How about you guys ‘€“ any bands your parents introduced you to that are still in heavy rotation in your library?

I listen to all the artists your mom listens to. This is weird.
