Inner City Blues: A Playlist

by Alyssa Mastrocco (English), published June 9th 2011

I grew up about fifteen minutes from Long Island’s Jones Beach, and once it gets warm, the only thing I want to do is speed down Ocean Parkway in my little red pickup truck with the windows down and the speakers pumping. Obviously each summer had its own soundtrack, but it was always something upbeat and easy to sing along to during the day and something a little more mellow once the sun went down. Now that I live in Boston without a car and with the nearest beach an hour away by T (damn you green line), my favorite summer activity has become a rare occurrence.

As much as I love riding my bike or walking, it’s not the same as the breeze through the driver’s side window, so I had to make a new soundtrack – something that comes as close to replicating that feeling as I can get in this situation.

I know there are a lot of throwbacks here. I never claimed to be hip when it comes to the music scene. I do, however, know exactly what I like. Take it as you will.
