Show Preview: Steel Train and fun. @ Royale Boston 12.3.10
by Bryan Berlin (Media Studies), published December 3rd 2010
Jack Antonoff is not the only element that connects bands Steel Train and fun. Besides Antonoff being a member in both bands, the two bands are currently touring together, and they make a stop at the Royale in Boston on December 3rd. On top of that, both bands have made an appearance at Northeastern’s AfterHOURS, so they are not foreign to Boston. Although I missed fun. at Northeastern, I did manage to catch Steel Train when they came earlier this semester. The unique thing about Steel Train is the spectrum of their sound. They commonly start songs off soft and do an incredible job of building them over their duration, and that really comes out when the perform live. Steel Train has the appearance of a punk rock band with a unique, indie rock sound. However, they bring the energy and stage presence of that punk rock band which is great. While I’ve never seen fun. before, I’m excited to hear them live and get to witness a portion of The Format. One of my dreams is to see them play live, but I can live seeing lead singer Nate Ruess. Overall, Steel Train and fun. make a great combo for a great Friday night. Go see them!
