Dark Explosions in the Hood
by Kyle Risley, published July 19th 2010
Hello all,
It was a big week here at Tastemakers as we presented to the SGA’s Finance Board for funding for our Tastemakers Presents show this fall. Keep your fingers crossed!
Next, I need to direct your attention to this terrific video taken at the Boston stop of Warped Tour. Tastemakers’ Marketing Director Andrew Phan had the opportunity to speak with another Andrew, Andrew W.K. Here’s what the elder Andrew had to say:
I’m not positive, but I’ll bet Tastemakers and WRBB are the only student groups to receive shout outs from Andrew W.K. Now all we need to do is interview Kelly Clarkson and our goals as an organization will be completed!
Get Darker & N-Type Join Forces
On Tuesday, the Get Darker crew and N-Type teamed up for Get Darker TV Episode #55. Get Darker highlights dubstep talent through their weekly TV and podcast series and over the last few years N-Type has been recognized as one of the genre’s best DJs. Listen to N-Type’s hour long mix of dark, head-nodding tunes from Tuesday here: Watch | Listen. Also, you can listen to N-Type on Tuesdays from 4-6pm on his weekly Rinse FM broadcast.
Butterfly Explosion
I first heard of Butterfly Explosion while frantically rummaging through NoData.tv (R.I.P.) in preparation for a What is this, the Internet?! show and downloaded their debut, Lost Trails, because their name sounded cool. Plus, they were labeled under shoegaze and I was still enamored by the genre from my time spent with The Radio Dept.’s terrific new album. Going in with moderate expectations (No Data had pretty consistent material) I was surprised to find the album was brimming with stadium-ready anthems as well as immersive, sweeping songs. Opener “Closer” is a slow burner that sounds like My Bloody Valentine making sweet love to Mono, while “Tracing Stars” has a more radio-friendly take, almost like Futures-era Jimmy Eat World (in a good way). The rest of the album goes through droning oceans of reverb, syrupy vocals, and mammoth walls of guitar tracks. This is a must listen for fans of The Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, and Explosions in the Sky and one of the best guitar-oriented efforts I’ve listened to in a while.
