Concert Preview – Junip 11.2.10 @ Royale Boston

by Bryan Berlin (Media Studies), published November 1st 2010

While Junip may not be a name you instantly recognize, you very well may recognize the name of their vocalist and guitarist Jose Gonzalez.  Jose Gonzalez has established a name for himself, releasing two solo albums.  Now, Jose has teamed up Tobias Winterkorn and Elias Araya to form Junip, but this isn’t a new collaboration.  Junip has been loosely together since 1999, and Gonzalez and Araya have played together since they were 14.

This lengthy history has finally led them to their first full length album release, Fields.  Released September 14, Fields is this Swedish band’s break into the big time.  They’re currently touring, and they will be in Boston this Tuesday at the Royale.  If you know Jose Gonzalez, you know how his fusion of South American heritage mixed with an upbringing in Sweden gives him one of the most beautiful sounding male vocalists out there.  Combine his voice and guitar with drums and keyboards, and you get the full sound of Junip.  While I’ve never seen either Jose or Junip live, I am very much looking forward to their show Tuesday night.
